Health: Post MMRV Reaction

Please note that I am not dispensing medical advise via this blog.

Any child who is ill must be reviewed by a medical professional. A complete history and physical examination is crucial in reaching proper diagnosis.

Both my kids have never develop post vaccination reaction. Not even a small swelling.

Here is our first.

I gave Lil Dragon her MMRV (Priori-Tetrax- GSK) jab on the evening of 2nd August 2013. A week after that she woke up with these small maculo-papular lesions on her face and a swollen left eye. First thing MIL said was, "Mosquito bites."  Rubbed some Lucas Papaw on the lesions, praying for them to be bites but nothing miraculous happened.

She was still her usual cheeky self, so I decided to go ahead with our weekend getaway. I just packed some extra anti-pyretics into our medicine bag, just in case. I will write another post on our medical bag's content.

The boobs came in handy..I no longer carry my pumps like the previous Hari Raya break when we stayed at The Majestic Hotel, Malacca. Now, she just DL. Ladies, please do try to breastfeed, you will thank me later. A soother, a pacifier, food, medicine, fluids all rolled into one travel convenient package.

We went for a swim and she was the first to run towards the wading  pool. She was laughing, kicking and splashing; unlike Tiger who cried and cried when we first introduced him to a pool.

Later that evening, she developed fever. MIL complained that it was the 'swimming'. Bah...I just gently suggested that it was most likely the vaccination. In anticipation that MMRV is likely to cause febrile seizures, I put her on regular anti-pyretics for the next 24 hours. The fever was well-controlled and it was gone with the rash within 36 hours.

Here she is, the next morning. All better. I am sharing this because I know a lot of parents are worried about the MMR vaccination. The most important factor here is your role as an informed parent. Do the right thing.

A little on MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) and MMRV (plus varicella)

At 1 year old, the MOH offers MMR vaccination. Varicella (Chickenpox) or the combination (MMRV) form is only available in private healthcare centers.

When you opt for MMRV, you are saving the child from one extra prick but at the same time, the child has a higher risk of developing high grade fever within 42 days post vaccination. Commonest at 5-12 days. Febrile seizure may or may not occur.

Common Myths:

MMR vaccinations do not cause autism. Period.
The Lancet published a study by Mr. Andrew Wakefield, MD (previously Dr) that stated that the combined MMR vaccine was linked to autism. However, investigations proved that Wakefield’s research was fraud, unfounded and biased. The Lancet itself withdrew the article and Wakefield lost his medical licence.

Breastfeeding replaces vaccination.
Passive immunity from mommy comes in the form of IgG via the placenta and last about 6-8 months for your baby. After that, your baby is no longer protected. In order to give them active immunity, man created vaccination. That man would be Edward Jenner who saved the world from smallpox. Vaccination basically imitates an infection which will cause production of IgG for further protection. Occasionally, boosters may be needed like the DPT shots.

Now, breastfeeding on the other hand provides protection in the from of IgA.
It means that if you breastfeed but do not vaccinate your child, he or she may still get chickenpox but breastfeeding will make it less serious.

Risks and responsiblities
For parents who are against vaccinations. Sigh....for the sake of their children, I hope that 'herd immunity'  protects them for as long as possible.
Every medication comes with risk, even paracetamol.

So, the most important step for you as a parent is to empower yourself with knowledge BUT do not be the doctor. Always seek professional opinion instead of posting silly questions on FB.

Get the correct information from:
1. CDC: For parents. Understand how vaccines work, misconception, risks, etc

Breastfeeding: Boob talk

While shopping for new clothes, I realised that besides getting the
right size, cut, quality, design, price and colour,
my clothes must now fulfil the following criteria:

1. Plenty of space for boob expansion.
2. Easy to pull down/side to reveal either boob.
3. Not too short.
4. Hide fat ass

Mom, you were right. Life is tough.

If boobs could tell a story, it will probably go like this:

B1: Right boob
B2: Left boob
(The names are in no way related to Bananas in Pyjamas)

Once upon a time, way before breastfeeding days,
B1 and B2 were living on the same area but they have never met.
Then, the geography started to change with the mysterious event known as pregnancy.

Once strangers, B1 and B2 can now 'see' each other.
They started shouting out their greetings across the plain.

B1: Helllooooooo! I can see you now.
B2: excited. Hiiiii!!!

After 9 months of rapid development and growth,
it started to become crowded.

B1: Let's hold our breath and see how big we can go.
Come on, I'll race you.....wahahaha
B2: Pfftt...fine. I bet I'll be engorged first!
B1: Ouch, ouch, ouch....
B2: What a stupid,stupid idea!

B1: Oooi, scoot over. You are in my space.
B2: Wtf? You are getting fatter by the minute. Oh wait, so am I.
B1: Maann, when are we going to stop fluctuating like this?
B2: Don't worry, let me leak a little and embarrass her.
Wahahaha, there...all done.
B1: You are so clever, let me do the same....woohoo!

After several months of breastfeeding, B1 and B2 finally accepted
the fact that they are not here for man to ogle at.
They are not here as decorative things.
They are no sexual objects.
They are mean breastfeeding machines.
Like,  Grrrrrrrrr!!!! kind of mean
Now, they want to be known as Righty and Lefty.
Because B1 and B2 are just so juvenile.

Righty: Is it me or are getting 'longer'?
Lefty: Yes, we both are. Look at the bright side. We can double as storage now.
Righty: What do you mean?
Lefty: Pfft...and you call yourself smart. Look, she can now hide money 'under' us.
Righty: Oooooo

Righty: Hey, are you sleeping?
Lefty: Ermm, no. Why?
Righty: Can you feed the slob next? I am still a little sore
Lefty: But the slob likes you more...
Righty: Hence the soreness *roll eyes*
Lefty: Fine but you owe me, big time.
Righty: Alright. Next time we are out in public, I will sacrifice myself.
Lefty: Thanks man, I am still agoraphobic.

Big Butt: Guys, can you shut up? ##@*  I am trying to get some sleep.
It's tiring trying to be anti gravity all day.
Righty: Yo, watch it man or we are coming to get you!
Left: Yeah, right now we are already at the umbilicus. You just wait!

No boobs were hurt in the making of this fictional conversation.
B1 and B2 are still well and making lots of milk at blog/post time.

Little Dragon: 5 Months

You will notice that she is wearing the same shirt because it has been proven that
you take way lesser pictures with Baby No. 2.
So, I was like, "Oh, 5 months, take photo, quick"

It's a been there done that thing
You no longer go, "Oooh, Day 53 of life, take a pic"

Ask my mom, there are barely 10 pictures of her No. 5...the poor thing.
I had a truckload since I was fat Baby No. 1.

Here's my little princess at 5 months.

POSER?
I think so.....

*Please ignore the background in the last pic and focus on the smile*

I try not to compare my children but it is pretty inevitable even in a good way.

At 5 months, Tiger was already sprouting teeth number 3 & 4, weaned and crawling.

Lil Dragon is still all gums, lucky me...

Gross Motor
She is ermm, rotating and trying to crawl, hence she does a lot of butt lifts.
Very amusing, I assure you.

Social
She is much easier to handle and people-friendly compared to Tiger.
Considering the fact that her sleep/naps are always interrupted by Tiger,

Such a happy, joyful child.

Sleep
Still feeds at 3 AM
Darn....

Have a great weekend you guys!

Breastfeeding: Pumping and Feeding Schedule

It has been 3 weeks since I returned to work. So far, 10 week old Little Dragon is still taking breastmilk only.

This is currently our schedule. (When I am fifty, I can look back at this post and marvel at my effort OR I can simply use it for emotional blackmail on Lil Dragon)

11 pm:
Breastfeed before bedtime. I will wake her up even if she is slumbering. Better than going to bed, only to be awaken an hour later.

3 am:
Lil Dragon will kick and squirm until she wakes lazy mommy up. She greets me with her beautiful smile (yes, even at this ungodly hour). A quick diaper change followed by breastfeeding. She usually finish within 5 minutes on one breast and we fall asleep together. Most of the time, I fall asleep first :p

Anytime from 7 am to 8 am:
Morning call. She usually does not go back to sleep after this time, preferring to have 'girl talks'. After  feeding, I pump before leaving for work.

From 9 am to 5 pm:
Mommy's at work, so Little Dragon takes 4-5 oz per feed every 3-4 hours with NUK bottles.
I pump at 11 o'clock and then again after lunch.
I use Medela Mini Electric pump at work. Each time I express, I get 4-5 ounces. Like most cheaper Medela pumps, it makes noise that puts the lawnmower to shame. Forget about using batteries if a power socket is not available. The weak suction will drive you mad.
* So if I am pumping while out and about or simply chilling out in front of the TV, I will use my manual First Years pump that I bought for RM 80 only from a warehouse sale. It is not as great as the Philips Avent Manual pump but it does the job well enough. For RM 80, I ain't complaining.

6 pm:
Power pump if I have no other obligations.

9 pm:
I breast feed if Lil Dragon's awake and fussy/refusing the bottle. If she's asleep, I will pump so that I can play 'school' with Tiger :)

The cycle repeats.

My 3rd pump:

At home, I am using my old Unimom Forte pump (made in Korea) that I bought since Tiger was 2 weeks old and it is still doing a fine job right now. Motors of breast pumps tend to wear down over time with heavy usage. (I exclusively pumped for Tiger)

For its hospital grade, double pumping efforts, it retails at RM 399 to RM 490 only (depending on sales). A Medela of the same function and power would cost 5 times more.

This time being a smarter, more experienced mama, I bought XL shields because my boobs 'grow' out of control during these times. I also changed the original membrane and valve with Medela ones which fitted perfectly. The Medela ones just seemed sturdier. Also, it saves me the hassle of going crazy looking for the original clear, transparent membranes during washing and steaming.

My only complaint would be its huge size (almost 2 kgs) which makes it inconvenient for working moms.

So, yeah...I have three pumps which brings the total to about RM800 for 2 babies. Not a bad investment considering all the benefits of breastmilk and money saved from buying formula.

Supplementation wise, I am neither a milk nor pill person. So, I take my daily 'dose' of Anmum Lacta (the only milk I can tolerate) to make up for any nutritional deficiency since I don't take the recommended 2700 calories per day. If I am not getting my fresh fish for the week, I will take my fish oil supplement.

Excerpt from Kellymom.com
  • Mothers who get 2200 calories per day may need extra calcium, zinc, magnesium, thiamin (vitamin B1), vitamin B-6 & vitamin E.
  • Mothers who get 1800 calories per day may need extra calcium, zinc, magnesium, thiamin, vitamin B6, vitamin E, folic acid, riboflavin (vitamin B2), phosphorus and iron.
  • Breastmilk levels of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and folic acid are fine even if your diet is deficient. If supplements are needed, they are for your benefit — not baby’s.
  • Levels of B vitamins in breastmilk are related to the mother’s intake, but a deficiency in the mother serious enough to affect her breastfed baby is very rare in the United States. (Hamosh, 1991; Lawrence & Lawrence, 2000)
I am not a crazy ass YOU MUST BREASTFEED snob. I didn't breastfeed Tiger exclusively and he is still doing fine. I am just grateful that I have been given the opportunity to do it this time.

If you are having problems or simply need a listening ear, feel free to drop me a pm. I can recommend a lactation consultant if required.  Cheers!

Our Birth Story

Little Dragon is almost 2 months old. Jeez....where did all the time go?

I am back at work and hence I have some time to update my poor abandoned blog. I wanted to write about our birth story since day one but I just couldn't find the time.

After fussing and fretting about my breech baby and method of delivery, well, I was cut in the end.
Since I wasn't showing any signs of labour up till the due date, we decided for the C-section.  After consulting the Feng Shui Master (Hey, I am Chinese..hehe...actually, it was hubby who wanted to know the auspicious timing), it was decided that the wife (me) will be butchered at 9am.

On the appointed day, I woke up at 6.30 am to get ready for the big day. Scared as hell, of course. As I was having my shower, I felt contractions which subsequently became stronger on the way to the hospital. After admission, the CTG confirmed that I was having contractions. The nurse asked if I wanted to wait and see or proceed with the C-section. At that point, I was already keen to get it over with (knowing the 'auspicious' timing and all). Also, I had already made up my mind and mentally prepared myself for a caesar. All I had wanted at that point was a calm, prepared environment for the baby's arrival. So, C-section it was.

The operating theatre was COLD but the very warm staff made it easier with their kindness. Nobody mentioned what a fat butt I had, just kidding. The anaesthesiologist was very professional. Dr B, my obstetrician who did the surgery for free was superb. While I was lying on the table, I felt very calm and well, drowsy after the spinal was given. The whole time I was praying, "Please let my baby be normal. Please cry. Please have a good Apgar. Please look like me...."

Lo and behold, my little princess came out fine. In fact, she peed all over me for her grand entrance. At that moment, I knew I was falling in love, pee and all.

Then, came the best part, recovery. Let's just say the first 2 days post C-section was f**king crazy painful and unbearable. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone to go through the same experience. Whoever recommended side nursing clearly lost their marbles. I was in so much discomfort that despite the IM pethidine, I could not breastfeed properly. Bonding? Forget about it...So, I breastfed sporadically and let the nurses feed Lil Dragon in the nursery while I rested.

I was thinking that this was another breastfeeding down the drain since she was bottle fed, even at home but hey...guess what? She breastfeeds like a charm after 2 weeks of bottle feeding. By then I was pumping regularly to build up a proper supply and supplementing with formula as needed. After 2 weeks, we were fully breastfeeding and now that I am back at work, I am able to provide enough for her. At night, we co-sleep and she breastfeeds happily. She's a booby kid, this one :)

I digress.

We were discharged by Day 3 and I was terribly excited to go home. Thank God I have a mother who had the common sense to realise that I would not survive without additional help. She managed to find a last minute confinement lady who helped out for 10 days. Boy, was she ever a help. I would have plummeted into depression if it was not for her. Her cooking was so nice I probably gained a few pounds. Also, she makes the yummiest bath water...herbs boiled with ginger and lemongrass...felt like I was in the spa.

So, thanks Mom! You really know best...

We are almost 8 weeks now and looking back, I would not have done anything differently.

Breastfeeding Days Are Almost Over...

Before I had Tiger, I have always thought that breastfeeding is a natural process.

Damn those posters of women with beautiful breasts cuddling their babies!

First of all you will actually look like crap after pushing and puffing for hours. You will not have a serene smile when you are breastfeeding with chapped nipples. Then your boobs will be engorged and painful. Not sexy at all.

This was how much I pumped one morning when I was dehydrated. I really need to keep an eye on my water intake or I am going to lose it. I still have my Domperidone stash for a milky boost should I decide to continue to breastfeed.

How to lose your post baby flab?

When I first found out that I was pregnant with Tiger, the first thing I did was to run out to get Palmer's body oil and tons of body butter. Yes, I am so vain and shallow. I was petrified of stretch marks. My mum had it, so that means genetically I was screwed. Did I get it? YES...damn those body oil. On the other hand my sister who was super lazy and never did a thing didn't get a single line or dot....WTF!!??

Well, the truth was because I am a shorty ( I'm only 5 ft 3') and the fact that I had put on a whopping 17 kg during my pregnancy, it was really just a nutter's fantasy to think that I would be spared. Was it bad? Nah, Just at the suprapubic area. Can still wear my bikini but high cut la. Did I lose all the 17 kg? Yes!! And honestly I didn't do much. Not a single diet program or exercise. Ha ha. What I did was absolutely free and anybody can do it.

Just suck it up and breastfeed your baby. I tried very hard and failed to breast feed Tiger directly. My Tiger, like his namesake was a feisty little dude. He simply refused to latch on. I had to supplement with formula but that's ok. Finally I resorted to fully expressing my breast milk.  I think breastfeeding is like ballroom dancing, if one partner has 2 left feet, it just isn't going to work. It's lots of work of pumping, washing the pump parts, sterilizing, warm up the milk, feed the baby, wash the bottles...arrgghh...but, happy baby = sane mummy.

Well, Tiger's 14 months now and I am still expressing.

Benefit of breastfeeding so far:

He's gotten viral fever once but fed well and was active despite high grade fever. It was over in 4 days. Occasional diarrhea and mild eczema during teething. Otherwise, height and weight is 50th to 75th centile.

Developmentally, he's about 18 month old, so I guess that's good.

Mummy get to save money on formula. Enfa formula is damn expensive..

Mummy lost all the chubbiness of pregnancy.BONUS!!

This is why I breastfeed :)

3 months post baby: still fat at 55 kg

Tiger's 1 year old: back to 47 kg!!
Note to self. Arms still flabby

The saying, 9 months up, 9 months down was so true for me. Well, I am just grateful to be able to wear all my old clothes except the button shirts. Some areas are still big, which is a bonus too.

So ladies if you are too busy or lazy to exercise, simply breastfeed or like my case, express! A lot of women I know lost their baby weight this way and I am living proof :)

Update  Oct 2012:

It is the battle against the dreaded post baby weight again. Since I gained 12 kilos this pregnancy, at 3 months post partum, I am 50 kgs.  I am still too lazy/tired to exercise and this time I am breastfeeding exclusively. Fingers crossed that I will lose all the weight again. Another 2 kilos to go....gambateh!!
